DIAPHRAGM LOCK
The Diaphragm Lock or Uddiyana Bandha gently massages the heart muscles and intestines. It supports the flow of prana through the central nerve channel of the spine and up into the neck area. It also helps to support the functioning of the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands. If you regularly practise the Diaphragm Lock, you will feel more joy, vitality and compassion. From my own experience as a singer, I know that it has increased my breathing capacity and created a more open and free vocal expression.
1 Sit in Rock Pose (see page 87) with a straight spine and exhale completely.
2 Lift the diaphragm up and back as far into the chest cavity as possible. At the same time contract the abdominal muscles toward the spine.
CAUTION: If applied forcefully on the inhalation, the lock may increase pressure in the heart, blood and eyes.
